The kids are back at school, the racing season is coming to a close, the nights are already drawing in….and it’s raining again.Every year at this time, Andy McKenna gets busy with Ice Driver in Sweden and I get busy with the Ice Driver website, marketing and all the logistics involved in getting a load of cars, spares support, staff and guests 350 miles north of Stockholm to the frozen lakes where Ice Driver winter rally school takes place.This year, we’ll be busier than ever, so there’ll be a new Winter Rally School blog going online soon to give a flavour of what it’s like, the build up to the season and all the other exciting events that will be happening around it.Last season, we had three time World Touring Car Champion Andy Priaulx with us for a day’s one-to-one tuition before he left for the Touring Car season in Brazil. There was also quite a lot of DV footage shot and we’ll have some samples online soon.

God, there’s some pretentious bollocks being talked about track days and driver coaching right now. It seems that in the absence of real skills and experiences, more and more instructors are aligning themselves with the deep-thinking-navel-contemplating school of “life skills” coaching.

This enables them to waffle happily along for many paragraphs talking about their ‘life coaching’ skills and past adventures and how they align themselves with your inner self or something……

I’m as certain as the next man that a competition driver’s mental state is vital. You’ve only got to look at the dominance of Loeb in WRC right now and listen to the other WRC drivers being interviewed to see the mental hold he has over them, though they’ll never admit it openly. Just look at Schumacher’s body language after he won and his attitude to work. It smashes the opposition’s mental state.

But wearing a black roll neck sweater, stroking your beard and going on about changing peoples structure of thinking and using driving as a mechanism for life change is just waffle.

It makes my blood boil….

Today, the revised version of the main website went live, with new images and a layout that will hopefully give inspiration to different ways to use photography. It was really hard deciding which shots to use as the backgrounds. If the image was too hard hitting, it shouted over the top of the page content and drowned it. There were lots of other issues too…. The only drawback with being a web designer as well as a photographer / writer is that my own websites get neglected. In the same way that mechanics always seem to drive the most beat-up old cars, my own website always seems to be the one that’s put on the back-burner in preference to clients’ work.

So my summer resolution-to-self is to post at least once a week here about some of the work I’ve been doing and hopefully get this part of the site beyond the ‘coming soon’ stage.
